Bio
Coach Greg Heiar is one of the rising names in the College Basketball coaching circle.  He has been an assistant at Chipola College, Head Coach at Chipola College, Assistant Coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, and now an Assistant Coach at Wichita State University. As you can see from his accomplishments, his praise is backed up by performance on and off the court. He has successfully coached 39 men to Division 1 programs, through discipline on the court, and in the classroom. As the Head Coach at Chipola, Heiar’s teams were known for their athleticism, up-tempo offense, tough nosed defense, and a sense of family among the  team. His style of play is perfectly compatible with Coach Marshall.

As a player, Greg played at Kirkwood Community College, he earned second-team All-Region honors after leading his team to the National Tournament for the first time in school history. Heiar helped to guide his team to a conference championship and an overall 25-10 record. He was also captain of our very own assistant coach Chris Jans’ first team at Kirkwood. Greg’s connection with Jans spans over 3 different teams.

Success followed Heiar to Franciscan University where he was twice named team captain and earned MVP honors. He also earned numerous all-tournament honors, first-team all-conference, and led his team to the MCC Conference Title as a senior, the first time in school history.

Heiar served one season as top assistant to former Chipola College head coach Chris Jans. Heiar played an enormous part in the Indian’s 2004 season, which included a Panhandle Conference Championship and FCCAA State Tournament Championship. The Indians then finished in sixth place at the National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, with an impressive 32-5 overall record, and 11-1 in conference play.

Coach Jans left the program at Chipola, and Heiar was promoted to the role of Head Coach at Chipola College. He coached there for 6 years, and amassed one of the best records in the history of NJCAA history. He led the Indians to an overall record of 164-15 and was named conference coach of the year 5 times, and NJCAA Region VIII coach of the year 4 times. He coached 39 men to go onto Division 1 schools.

Greg then was hired to be an assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi. He spent 2 years there, and helped USM develop talent they already had, as well as help recruit top players to their program. Coach Heiar was one of the favorites down in Mississippi, and many fans were very disappointed to see him leave, as they viewed him as one of the key elements to their program for the future. Greg couldn’t turn down a chance to reunite with Assistant Coach Chris Jans for a third time in his career, as well as coach at a University that has as much dedication and history as Wichita State does.  Heiar had this to say about joining Coach Marshall’s staff, ““This was all about Coach Marshall and the program he runs,” Heiar said. “I’ve always been able to get really good players, and I just can’t wait to try to continue to get Coach Marshall as good of players, or better players. It was a no-brainer because of what we think of Coach Marshall,” Heiar said, speaking for his family. “They’ve built that thing through hard work and out-working people. It’s a dream school for me to work at.”

Greg has a wife, Jessica, and one daughter Alexis.
