The Shockers just got bigger. Coach Marshall recently announced the signing of his 11th international player, Asbjorn Midtgaard, a 7-foot, 270 pound center from Denmark. He will join an already formidable frontcourt which includes Shaq Morris, Darral Willis Jr., and Rauno Nurger. The 19-year-old Dane only started playing basketball at 14. He however currently plays with older professionals for the Horsholm 79ers in the Basketligaen a professional league in Denmark where he averaged 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Midtgaard is a big body with great footwork and has the ability to establish position offensively in the post. Although his shooting and dribbling may need progress, one trait that stands out is his strength. Many believe he is game-ready to play at the collegiate level in terms of physicality. He has the potential to stretch the floor on the offensive end by being active in post-up situations and kicking the ball back out to shooters. In GoShockers.com’s press release on the signing of Asbjorn, Gregg Marshall is quoted “Asbjorn possesses two important qualities that you look for in a post player: hustle and muscle. Obviously the first thing about Asbjorn that jumps out at you is his size. He’s 7-feet and a chiseled 270, even though he’s only been lifting weights for about six months now. But we were equally impressed by his charisma, both as a player and a person, and his passion for the game of basketball. He’s developed a nice skill-set around the basket and is getting better by the day.”
Midtgaard said the decision to commit to Wichita State was very simple, because “it felt like home.” He said “Everyone was so nice and welcoming. And of course, the playing style fit me perfectly. Physical and tough. It’s just my cup of tea. And the guys are all hard workers, and I really like that.” Marshall said . “He’s going to keep getting better because he stays in the gym.” The young Dane, will also benefit from the leadership of older front-court players. Midtgaard is a long term project, but will immediately benefit from the mentoring of older shockers. He joins Hutch Community College guard, Samajae Haynes-Jones in Wichita State’s upcoming 2017 recruiting class.
