On Friday evening, the 2015-16 college basketball season officially tips off for the Shockers. Their opponent will be the reigning Big South regular season champions, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Missing the NCAA tournament, last season ended with a loss to Old Dominion in the first round of the NIT. Head Coach Barclay Radebaugh is starting his 11th season at Charleston Southern after leading the Bucs to the most regular season wins in program history last year. Coach Radebaugh served under Gregg Marshall as an assistant while the two were at Winthrop.

Senior forward, Aaron Wheeler is Charleston Southern’s only returning starter. Wheeler averaged 7.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. He was a JUCO transfer last season that the Buccaneers hope will blossom in his second year. The Bucs will look to senior guard Demetrius Pollard and junior guard Patrick Wallace to fill the vacancy left by the graduation of Arlon Harper and Saah Nimley. Those shoes are big, as Harper and Nimley graduated as the 3rd highest scoring duo in Big South history.

The Shockers hope to open the 2015-16 firing on all cylinders. However, that peak efficiency may have to wait if Fred VanVleet decides sitting out to rest his hamstring is best for the future. If VanVleet sits, I would expect to see freshman Landry Shamet make his debut as a Shocker also as a starter. This Wichita State team is tasked with replacing the production of Darius Carter and Tekele Cotton. Transfer Anton Grady will make the task easier, but last year’s bench will have to step up. Sophomores Shaq Morris and Rashard Kelly as well as senior Bush Wamukota look to make an impact in the paint.
