Wichita State starts the season off with an exhibition game against D-II Hawaii Pacific. The Sharks are making their first trip to Koch Arena for the teams’ first meeting. Darren Vorderbruegge, a former Kansan himself, is starting his eigth season as head coach for HPU; the Sharks are coming off their best season ever under Vorderbruegge, finishing the 2014-2015 season with a 16-11 record. Coach “V” is a tactician who, similar to Gregg Marshall, gets the most out of his players: last season, Vorderbruegge’s Sharks were 8-2 in games decided by 2 possessions or less. Vorderbruegge is a graduate of local Bethany College and has a masters degree from Wichita State. Before becoming a college coach, Darren won the Wichita City League title as the head coach of Wichita Northwest in 2000.

Hawaii Pacific graduated five seniors in May, three of which were starters last season. The Sharks return their leading scorer, senior 6’8″ forward Luke Hager, who averaged 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game last season. The other returning starter, junior guard Clayton Guy, hails from Kansas City, Missouri. Guy started 26 of 27 games last season averaging 4.1 points and rebounds per game. HPU boasts a roster with four players 6’8″ or taller and nearly all of their guards are 6’2″ or taller.

Transfers Conner Frankamp and Peyton Allen are the only Shocker players not allowed to participate in the exhibition due to transfer rules. All other Shockers may participate without repercussion of burning a redshirt. Frankamp starts his career December 12th against Utah at Intrust Bank Arena. Allen will not join the team until next season. Expect to see Gregg Marshall experiment with different lineup chemistry for this exhibition game. Also, expect to see limited to non-existent minutes for VanVleet who has been rehabing from a tweaked leg injury.

Wichita State starts the year ranked 10th in the AP top 25 which is their 40th consecutive weekly appearance. Only Duke, Kansas and Arizona boast longer streaks. The Shockers have the 3rd longest active home winning streak at 32.
