Chris Jans, former Wichita State Assistant Coach, known for his strategy and game planning, will be bringing those skills back to WSU in his new role as consultant. Paul Suellentrop reported Thursday that in his new capacity, Jans will be under a renewable 45-day contract that pays $10,000 per contract period. Under NCAA rules, Jans’ contract as a consultant requires that he observe practices and film, and may only communicate with coaching staff after practices have concluded; Jans may not speak with players about basketball or performance.
Gregg Marshall hired Jans as an assistant coach in 2007, Marshall’s first year leading the WSU Men’s Basketball program; Jans was then promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2011.While associate head coach under Gregg Marshall, Jans was listed as the top assistant coach deserving a head coaching job by Basketball Times. Prior to accepting the position at Wichita State, Jans acted as head coach at Chipola College in Florida and as assistant coach at Illinois State University. Jans left Wichita State in 2014 to assume the head coaching role at Bowling Green for one season before his termination in April for an off-the-court incident.
